Should I divorce with an online service?

On Behalf of Law Offices of Matthew S. Schultz, P.C. | Nov 27, 2020 | Divorce |

If you researched topics as you are thinking about divorcing your partner, you might have noticed online divorce ads. These internet services have you pay a fee, fill out forms and you will get your divorce in a short amount of time.

The process might seem simple and like an easy choice, but utilizing an online service can lead to issues later on.

Lack of protection from mistakes

Depending on the type of online service you use, the company might just take your money and you will not get anything in return. If the service is more reputable, you might still run into errors because a paralegal or attorney might not even review your documents.

You are responsible for the time and money involved in correcting these issues. If your divorce papers have issues, the court may reject them and you will have to start over. Even worse, if you make certain mistakes you could lose certain property or rights.

Inability to work out spousal issues

Online legal services only cover uncontested divorces. Courts will not accept your paperwork if it is not compatible with the rules of your local court system. If you and your spouse still have unresolved issues such as child custody, child support and property division, you will not be able to use a flat-fee service.

Overall, this type of divorce will likely lead to issues caused by incorrect or incomplete documents. Attorney representation in a traditional divorce brings the protection and peace of mind that most people are looking for.
